Shania, My Lady German Shepherd

For those of you that have requested an update on Shania's current condition:

 

She is off her prescribed medications (two stomach protectors, a steroid, one pain pill and anti-diarrhea meds.)

 

The padded sling that was used to gently lift her back end is now hanging near our front door, just in case her spine and legs fail her.

 

The rice and chicken diet has been replaced by her regular kibble and Milk Bones.

 

Shania is sleeping comfortably six hours through the evening.

 

She can no longer use our 1/2 acre corner lot for running and jumping.  A small area has been designated for her physical therapy.  We use a leash to escort Shania to the yard, remove it for 10-20 minutes, then bring her back in. Shania cannot be left unattended in the yard as she was prone to running alongside the fence with dogs, motorcycles, neighbors, strollers and diesel trucks.  She loved to 'run like the wind' but those days are now over.

 

Shania cannot use stairs at this time.  We have blocked off the stairway down to our master bedroom and bath.  This means that my hubby and I take turns sleeping upstairs on the couch so we can be in close proximity to her.

 

We have been told that she will make a recovery in six to twelve months. We selected a conservative approach to the spinal injury, instead of driving seven hours to Washington for surgery.

 

What's important to remember: Our pet of nine years is slowly coming back to us.  She is still the same loving, strong, protective, assertive, intelligent dog.  Lady Shania K. Bellissimo, S.K.D. is learning to live with her disability, as we are.  We appreciate your prayers and good wishes.
